  • Hippocrates (460 BC – 370 BC) said, "Look well to the spine for the cause of disease." There are a number of reasons why he made this statement, but one reason is he found that after rubbing a thin layer of mud on his patients' back, one small area near the spine would dry quicker than the rest of the mud on the patients' back. While he lacked the scientific knowledge we have today, he concluded that the reason for this area drying faster was due to the muscles and tissues producing extra heat as a result of spinal dysfunction.

  • Chiropractic care focuses on finding then removing subluxations through adjusting the spine. A subluxation is when a vertebrae is out of alignment with the vertebrae above, below, or both while having a negative impact on the spinal cord and/or the nerves exiting from or returning to the spinal cord. When a nerve is compressed, it isn't able to tell the body what to do nor can it tell the brain what the body is doing as well as it could without being compressed. This eventyually leads to pain, dysfunction, and illness.

  • In the Chiropractic profession, the word "adjustment" is used rather than "manipulation" or "treatment". The reason for this is the word "manipulate" has a negative connotation that implies control for self-benefit, devious infulence, tampering or deception. The word "treatment" implies that only the problematic symptoms will be addressed. The purpose of Chiropractic is to find the cause of the problem, adjust the subluxation(s), and allow the patient's body to heal itself.

  • The Chiropractic profession was founded by D.D. Palmer on September 18, 1895 in Davenport, Iowa. His son, B.J. Palmer, is credited as being the developer of Chiropractic.

  • Rev. Samuel Weed coined the word "chiropractic" which comes from two Greek words which translate to "done by hand".

  • The phrase "innate intelligence" is often used in the Chiropractic profession. Innate intelligence is the inborn knowledge that every living being contained within itself. It's what makes a plant grow toward the sun and how babies know to cry when they're hungry. Furthermore, it's how your body knows how to regulate all of its functions (immune, digestive, hormonal, respiratory, etc…) automatically without you ever having to consciously manage them yourself.

  • A doctor of Chiropractic is a State licensed, National and (depending on certain states) State Board certified Primary Care Physician.

  • While the common perception is that Chiropractic is focused on the spine, the true focus is on the entire nervous system. The vertebrae of the spine are often used in Chiropractic as way to relieve tension and/or pressure off the nerves that connect to the spinal cord, as well as the spine itself, thus allowing the brain and body to transmit information more efficiently.

  • In the US, students are required to complete a minimum of 4,200 hours of lecture, laboratory, and clinical experience before graduating as a Doctor of Chiropractic. Often is the case that the average total of hours of curriculum completed is closer to 4,800 hours, which makes the Chiropractic profession have one of the highest and most stringent requirements of any disciplines of health care professions.
